In May, the National Science Board elected planetary geophysicist Maria Zuber as chair and computer scientist Diane Souvaine as vice chair. With France Córdova serving as National Science Foundation Director, top leadership positions at the foundation are now all occupied by women for the first time.

The Senate confirmed John King, Jr. as education secretary, promoting the former teacher and New York education commissioner from acting secretary to cabinet official. King will be responsible for implementation of the newly minted K-12 education law, the Every Student Succeeds Act.

The Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee held a hearing to consider six of President Obama’s nominees for leadership positions at the Department of Energy and Department of Interior, including Cherry Murray to be Director of the DOE Office of Science.

On August 5, President Obama announced a slate of nominations for key science posts in his Administration, including Cherry Murray to be Director of the Department of Energy Office of Science and Richard Buckius to be Deputy Director of the National Science Foundation.

By a vote of 97-0 yesterday, the Senate confirmed Ernest Moniz to be the new Secretary of Energy.
