ESVA Search Tips

The Name Search is the best way to begin looking for images of particular people and institutions. It is set up so that there is a logical AND between each word. Searching for John Wheeler will bring up only images containing both "John" and "Wheeler". NOTE: unless restricted (see below) this includes group shots.

The Keyword Search can be used to look for equipment, place names, or other information that appears in our photo descriptions. Keywords can also be used in conjunction with Name searches to narrow results; for instance, a Name search on "Feynman" and a Keyword search on "drum" will return our only image of Richard Feynman playing a drum.

When searching for persons of whom we have many photos, you may want to restrict according to Category (such as Formal Portrait or With Family) in order to narrow the results.

The Browse by Name function (linked at bottom of page) allows you to browse alphabetically by a person's last name or the name of an institution or conference, such as Solvay Conference.

The Quick Search query embedded in our header searches across the "Description," "Date," "Credit," and "Names" fields. It can search precisely on catalog numbers, such as Bohr Niels A1. It is useful when a photo has been previously purchased and you need look it up again to pay the use fee (it is better to enter last name first to obtain more results).
