Use Policy

Images from the Emilio Segrè Visual Archives (ESVA) are for educational use only and cannot be used in advertisements or non-educational products. Otherwise, photos may be used subject to the following conditions, with the understanding that the Emilio Segrè Visual Archives DOES NOT CLAIM COPYRIGHT to these images.

Reproduction cost

ESVA does not lend photographs or negatives, but for a nominal charge will provide prints or digital scans of materials in the collection.

Service fee

A service fee for publishing, reproducing or publicly displaying photo(s) must be paid in addition to duplication costs. (No fee if the images will only be displayed privately.) This fee is a service fee, not a license in the legal sense. We assess the fee to help cover the cost of preserving the collection according to archival standards and maintaining this online image database.

Upon payment of the fee, permission is granted for non-exclusive, one-time use of ESVA's copy of the photograph(s). One-time use is defined as any manifestation of the current project. Certain images may be protected by copyright not owned by AIP. While we make every effort to provide information regarding copyright status, the responsibility for obtaining all necessary permissions remains with the applicant (see below). The copyright holder may charge a fee in addition to ESVA's service fee.

Users must reapply for use for future editions or projects.

Credit

The credit line, as displayed on the reverse of the photo or as provided with a digital file, must be included with use of the image. (Info about credit line)

Copyright information

ESVA does not claim copyright to the images in the collection. The archive is primarily made up of copies of photographs received from various sources including scientists, their families and colleagues, and institutions, with the understanding that ESVA will make available copies for educational purposes.

The origin of many of the photos is unclear. If we have any idea who holds copyright, we try to provide that information in the credit line that accompanies the image, as well as contact information for the possible copyright holder if we have it. Responsibility for clearing copyright for publication or public display remains with applicant.
