Recently enacted legislation provides new congressional backing for the nation’s earthquake monitoring and drought information systems. Though Congress did not pass other bills supporting volcano and landslide monitoring before it adjourned, Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee Chair Lisa Murkowski (R-AK) has indicated she remains committed to working on them and has identified climate change as a hazard that also warrants action.

Just before the end of the 115th Congress, the Senate confirmed Kelvin Droegemeier as director of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy. Nominees to lead the DOE Office of Science, DOE Office of Nuclear Energy, ARPA-E, and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration were not considered.

The enactment of the National Quantum Initiative Act on Dec. 21 creates a multiagency program spanning the National Institute of Standards and Technology, National Science Foundation, and Department of Energy. As part of the initiative, NSF and DOE will each establish between two and five competitively awarded research centers.
