The House Science, Space, and Technology Committee’s Subcommittee on Space held a February 4 hearing to discuss potential updates to the Commercial Space Launch Act.  Challenges faced by the commercial space industry include compliance with potentially outdated federal laws and regulations, federal export regimes, and international competition.  The hearing demonstrated bi-partisan interest in helping the development of the United States Commercial space sector.

The Committee on Science, Space, and Technology’s Subcommittee on Research and Technology held a January 9 hearing to discuss engaging students in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) fields.  The subcommittee discussed research at the Smithsonian during a January 14 hearing.  The STEM education initiatives under discussion at the January 9 hearing were conducted by private organizations.  Members were interested to learn how the federal government could leverage the resources of private sector STEM education investments.  Improving STEM education activities beyond the scope of

The FY 2014 appropriations cycle has come to a close.  President Obama has signed into law an FY 2014 omnibus bill, consisting of twelve separate appropriations bills, that was passed last week by the House and Senate.

The FY 2014 appropriations cycle is coming to a close.  On Monday evening an almost 1,600 page bill was released that was the product of intense negotiations between the House and Senate Appropriations Committees since a budget agreement was announced in December.  This omnibus bill, consisting of twelve separate appropriations bills, was passed by the House on Wednesday by a wide margin, by the Senate last night by a vote of 72-26, and has been sent to President Obama.

The Senate Commerce Committee’s Subcommittee on Oceans, Atmosphere, Fisheries, and Coast Guard held a December 12 hearing to assess efforts at the National Weather Service (NWS) to improve access, accuracy, and timing of weather forecasting and predictions.  The hearing demonstrated the bi-partisan interest in preventing economic losses and reducing the human toll caused by extreme weather events.  Coordination and cooperation efforts by the weather community were a focus of the discussions throughout the hearing as senators sought to build a “weather ready nation.”
