'In a field test of lightwave communication, Michael Buckler of Bell's Atlanta lab is using an optical-fiber patch cord to connect to a fiber from an underground cable. Each of the fibers from the cable ends in an optical coupler, the covers of which are the yellow 'buttons' visible on the front panel.
