Description:

Aerial view of the CERN nuclear research laboratories. At the left can be seen the 28 thousand million electronvolt (28 GeV) alternating gradient proton synchrotron. In the foreground the large experimental halls in which the high energy nuclear physics experiments are carried out and, to the rear of these, the huge ring building, 200 metres (656 feet) in diameter, embedded in earth, in which protons are accelerated up to 99.94 percent of the speed of light. This machine is the joint realization of the Member States of CERN, now amounting to 14, all from Europe.
