Professor S. Chatterjee of the Physics Department is connecting a scintillation counter to a large magnetic particle spectrometer. The energies of charged particles (protons, deuterons, alpha particles, etc.) are measured by deflection in the magnet. The charged particles enter the spectrometer through the tube shown in the lower right hand corner of the picture, are then bent 90 degrees by the magnetic field, and are detected by scintillation counters mounted on the top. The magnet was designed by Professor A. I. Yavin and Mr. R. L. Burman of the Physics Department and will be used with the new University of Illinois cyclotron.
