The balls in Fig. 1 and 2 represent particles of water: in the former, the square form denotes the arrangement in water, the rhomboidal form in the latter, denotes the arrangement in ice. The angle is always 60 or 120 degrees. Fig. 3. represents the perpendicular section of a ball resting upon two others, as 4 and 8, Fig. 1. Fig. 4. represents the perpendicular section of a ball resting upon two balls, as 7 and 5, Fig. 2. The perpendiculars of the triangles shew the heights of the strata in the two arrangements. Fig. 5. represents one of the small spiculae of ice formed upon the sudden congelation of water cooled below the freezing point. See page 134. Fig. 6. represents the shoots or ramifications of ice at the commemcement of congelation. The angles are 60 and 120 degrees.
