Dr. Robert N. Hall, a physicist who recently retired from General Electric Research and Developmnt Center has won the 1989 Marconi International Fellowship for his invention of the semiconductor injection laser in 1962. Today, the device plays a significant role in everyday life -- in compact disk players, laser printers, and most optical fiber communications systems.
