John Kraus making radio field strength measurements near Ann Arbor, Michigan, at 5-meters wavelength in connection with his PhD dissertation research in physics. Professor Neil H. Williams of the University of Michigan Physics Department was Kraus' advisor. Williams made some of the earliest measurements of electron noise and was the inventor of the screen-grid vacuum tube.
