About the William F. Meggers Gallery of Nobel Laureates

History

William F. Meggers in his office at the National Bureau of Standards in Washington, DC, 1958. Behind him on the wall are some of the original Nobel Laureate portraits.

Donated to the American Institute of Physics (AIP) in 1958, the William F. Meggers Gallery of Nobel Laureates began as a portrait collection of 30 Nobel Laureates in spectroscopy and related physics fields. After the donation was finalized, AIP undertook the task of augmenting the collection to include photographs of all winners of the Nobel Prize in Physics and physicists who received a Nobel Prize in other areas. It has since grown (and continues to grow each year) to over 200 portraits.

The gallery, dedicated to the memory of William F. Meggers, is now fully digitized, making it accessible to researchers who visit AIP and researchers throughout the world. Here in this interactive gallery, we have compiled related resources from the Niels Bohr Library & Archives, including quotes from our oral history interviews, additional photographs from our Emilio Segrè Visual Archives, and archival documents from our robust collection of archived materials to contextualize these Nobel Laureates and spark interest in our other collections.

All materials used in this gallery are from the Niels Bohr Library & Archives unless noted otherwise. For more information on our collections, see the Explore more resources menu below.
