(L-R): Sidney Drell (deputy director of SLAC), Yuri Orlov, Catherine Fitzpatrick (research director, Helsinki Watch and translator) at a New York Academy of Sciences reception in Orlov's honor. This reception took place shortly after his deportation to New York from Siberian exile in October, 1986.

A well-known Soviet physicist and human rights activist, Orlov spent years in KGB prison, labor camp and Siberian exile as punishment for his human rights activities. After arriving in the US, he resumed his scientific research in 1987 at Cornell University and Brookhaven National Laboratory.
