Description:

Portrait of Rolland Perry who designed and constructed the new multi-million volt electrostatic generator at the Argonne National Laboratory, undergoes a 'hair raising' experience as he observes the instrument in operation. Small objects, such as hairs, threads, bits of paper, and particles of dust, are given an electrical charge by the generator, and are attracted to the machine. It is to be noted that Dr. Perry's hair tends to point toward the machine. No light is emitted from the generator, and the illumination of the cap is due entirely to external lighting. When placed into final operation, the instrument will be housed in the metal cylinder (portion of cylinder is shown at left) and surrounded by nitrogen.
