Dr. Yoh-Han Pao (left) and Dr. Peter Rentzepis (right) of Bell Telephone Laboratories are the firt to use light from a laser to create a specific chemical reaction. They irradiated a sample of distilled monomer styrene (in the flask) with light from a pulsed ruby laser (not shown). The simultaneous absorption of two photons by the monomer molecule caused polymerization. This experiment may open the door to the exploration with laser light of new molecular phenomena.
