Mercury and other pollutants are emitted from the stacks of this municipal refuse incinerator in Washington, DC. Recently constructed in an inner-city residential neighborhood, the incinerator is located near an elementary school and playground. Physicists James Repace (left) and Gordon Wood Anderson helped to expose this potential health hazard.
