The bright red beam of coherent light emanting from the helium-neon gaseous optical maser is examined by Dane Rigden of Bell Telephone Laboratories. Rigden and Alan White designed the device to radiate at a higher frequency than did the original helium-neon device. A feature of the new optical maser is a direct current excitation, as opposed to the former use of a radio frequency discharge.
