Russian Academy of Sciences founded by Pyotr Romanov (Tsar Peter the Great), laid the foundation for the modern enterprise of science in the USSR. The scope of Peter's endeavor can be judged from the fact that the hall shown (above) is just one wing of the Kunstkamera, the oldest building still standing in which academy members first met.
