The first atomic energy reactor specifically designed for medical research will be built for the Medical Center at the University of California at Los Angeles by North American Aviation. Gamma rays and neutrons will be produced by atomic fission in the reactor and can be directed to a patient under treatment for cancer just a few feet away. Dr. Chauncey Starr, left, Vice President in charge of North American's Nuclear Engineering and Manufacturing Division, and his associate Dr. Stafford L. Warren, Dean of the U.C.L.A. Medical School, discuss model of the 50 kilowatt reactor.
