The Franklin Institute's 1981 John Price Wetherill Medal was shared by IBM's Frank Fang, Alan Fowler, Webster Howard, Frank Stern and Phillip Stiles 'for almost a decade of research that has advanced the scientific community's understanding of transistors and the behavior of electrons at or near their surfaces.'
