Donald Stockbarger, in his laboratory at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), is removing a three inch crystal from the thin platiunum crucible in which it was grown at a temperature of more than 1200 degrees centigrade. Before him are other crystals of various sizes. The electric furnace in which they were grown is shown at the right.
