Kuiper Airborne Observatory (KAO). Charles Townes, with graduate student Sara Beck (U.C. Berkeley), Tom Matheson (KAO computer operator), and graduate student, Don Brandshaft (U.C. Berkeley) monitor incoming data from the UCB Fabry Perot far-infrared spectrometer, 1978. Townes' students flew on earlier version of the spectrometer on the Learjet.
