Fred Lawrence Whipple (Harvard-Smithsonian) received the Gerard P. Kuiper Prize of the Division for Planetary Sciences for 'his research activities involving meteors and comets, which led to a better understanding of the physical properties of the Earth's upper atmosphere and provided information on the density of meteoritic material in space.'
